Charlize Theron, Misty Copeland, Yao Chen debut Breitling's first ladies' Chronomat
Available in two different sizes – 32mm or 36mm – the watch is an updated take on the 80s original, straddling the lines between casual, sporty and elegant.
In recent years, women have emerged as a growing segment of watch buyers. Their preferences too have changed. Gone are the days where small, dainty designs, resplendent with diamonds, were the de rigueur choice. These days, women have a desire for larger dials, with less sparkle – something that can be used as an everyday timepiece.
For decades, the Chronomat, Breitling’s all-purpose sporty timepiece made to suit every occasion, has been one of the brand’s most popular timepieces. Its masculine design, however, was geared towards men.
With a growing interest from the ladies, Breitling has now introduced new iterations of the timepiece, designed specially for women.
The ladies’ Chronomat watches take their cues from the 80s original, featuring rider tabs, a polished case and the Rouleaux bracelet. Sporty yet elegant, the retro-inspired design is well-suited to any occasion, from business meetings and gala dinners to, well, the beach.
Two sizes have been launched, one in 32mm and the other in 36mm. Now, while the watch is meant for women, the 36mm version can well be worn by men with slim wrists. (The Rolex Datejust, by comparison, also comes in a 36mm variant).
To launch the collection, Breitling partnered with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, dancer Misty Copeland and Chinese actress Yao Chen, collectively known as the Spotlight Squad.
“Our inspiration for this new collection is the Breitling woman herself, as represented in our Squad on a Mission campaign: A woman of purpose, action, and style who’s at the top of her game,” said Breitling CEO Georges Kern.
“Who better than Charlize Theron, Misty Copeland, and Yao Chen to turn the spotlight on major global causes as they redefine what it means to be a strong woman? Three leading stars known for being fierce and pushing boundaries.”
The Chronomat collection is available in an array of metal cases – stainless steel, bicolour, or 18K red gold. Those who wish for extra sparkle can opt for diamond-set bezels and indexes.
The Chronomat 32 runs on the Breitling Calibre 77, a quartz movement that has a battery life of three to four years. It comes in seven versions, with white or midnight blue dials.
Meanwhile, the Chronomat Automatic 36 is powered by the automatic Breitling Calibre 10 with a reserve of about 42 hours. There are ten versions to choose from, with special lacquered dials in white, pale green, midnight blue, or copper.
