During the COVID-19 pandemic, online jewellery auctions have performed exceptionally well. But despite this success, the return of live sales is much-anticipated by both collectors and the auction houses themselves. After all, examining the quality and beauty of jewellery pieces is best done in person.
In July, live jewellery auctions will resume in Asia, led by Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Jul 10. Featuring over 200 lots, the auction will be led by a pair of Fancy Vivid coloured diamond rings.
Offered separately, the two rings are a Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ring weighing 4.49 carat, and a Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ring weighing 5.04 carat. Both are cut into charming heart shapes.
The pink diamond ring is estimated to be sold between US$7.5 million (S$10.4 million) to US$8.8 million (S$12.2 million), while the blue diamond ring is estimated to be sold between US$7.7 million to US$9.7 million.
Other highlights of the auction include an antique diamond and enamel bracelet by Garrard & Co, a gift bestowed upon Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s sister, for her 21st birthday. Princess Margaret was spotted wearing the antique bracelet many times in public, indicating her affinity to the piece. The bracelet is estimated to rake in between US$49,000 to US$64,500.

Iconic creations from luxury houses include a glamorous pair of Colombian Emerald and Diamond Earrings from Harry Winston (US$1,550,000 to US$1,940,000), the famed Zip necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels (US$310,000 to US$451,000), an art deco brooch by Cartier from its famed Tutti Frutti series (US$155,000 to US$207,000) as well as an eclectic array of Panthere designs.

Celebrating the revival of jadeite to the market, the sale also features a selection of the finest jadeite jewellery with gemstone quality.
“Our recent success with online sales clearly reflects the resilience of the jewellery auction market, and a strong appetite for top quality jewels in Asia. This much-anticipated live auction of Magnificent Jewels will bring a diverse offering of jewellery, from the hottest colour diamonds, the most sought-after iconic designs, to the finest jadeites that are increasingly popular with collectors around the world," said Wenhao Yu, Deputy Chairman, Jewellery of Sotheby's Asia.
"We look forward to welcoming our clients in Hong Kong this July and engaging with collectors worldwide via our digital innovations."
