For a designer, inspiration can be everywhere. Just ask Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, who took a viral tomato meme and turned it into a real clutch bag.
A photo of a large, oddly-shaped tomato went viral on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) recently, when user @homocowboi reposted the image with the caption, “This tomato is so Loewe I can’t explain it”. The image has garnered more than 98k likes and 3.7 million views.
It also caught Anderson’s attention, who shared a screenshot of the post on his own personal Instagram account. Embracing the viral moment, Anderson then posted a video of a real tomato clutch bag similar to the one in the meme with the caption, “Loewe meme to reality".
The clutch appears to be made of red leather, with a gold stem and a Loewe emblem on the clasp. The interior looks like it's lined in leather. At the moment, there is no indication if the bag will be up for sale.
The reactions to the video have been positive. “The turnaround on this was iconic,” one user wrote. “This is so unserious, I love it,” wrote another.
Anderson is known for his unusual bag shapes. In 2022, he created a pigeon clutch bag for his menswear label JW Anderson, and it was spotted on Sarah Jessica Parker’s arm while the actress was filming an episode of Sex And The City sequel And Just Like that...
The bag quickly sold out. The pigeon “must be cradled, or carried like a precious object”, Anderson said of the bird.
